Background

Picket fences are widely used for villas, farmhouse, gardens, commercial establishments, land plots etc. to mark boundaries in an aesthetically pleasing manner. Traditionally, materials such as wood, cement, metal, FRP, and PVC have been used for this purpose. Among these, PVC has been the most preferred choice due to its lower cost compared to wood, FRP, and metal, despite its lower strength.

Fencing contractors faced challenges with PVC picket fences, particularly with strength and durability. They sought a better alternative that could address these issues without significantly increasing costs.

 

 

Challenges Faced

  1. Low Strength of PVC Fences – Breakages occurred during both installation and usage, leading to frequent replacements and increased costs.

  2. Material Wastage – PVC picket fences were made by cutting required sizes from PVC boards, resulting in significant material wastage.

  3. Workability Concerns – The contractor needed a material that could be cut into different picket fence designs without losing structural integrity.

 

 

Solution: Unwood as a New Fencing Material

unWood, a wood-alternative material made using plastic waste, was presented to the fencing contractor as a potential replacement for PVC. After evaluating the product, the contractor identified key advantages:

  1. Higher Strength & Durability – Unwood demonstrated significantly better strength than PVC, reducing breakage during installation and usage. Being weatherproof, fences have longer life and lesser maintenance. 

  2. Better Material Efficiency – Unwoods ability to supply ready to install pickets resulted in minimal material wastage compared to cut PVC boards when the contractor was installing them at site.

  3. Workability & Customization – Unwood could be cut in different top shapes as needed without affecting its structural weaknesses.

  4. Paint ability Tests – Unwood Fences could be painted as required to meet aesthetic customization requirements.
